Question 1: Understanding TELL Materials

TELL materials are digital tools and platforms that support language learning. They help make lessons interactive, engaging, and collaborative.

Three examples of TELL materials are:

Duolingo (app) – Duolingo uses gamified exercises to teach vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures. It provides immediate feedback, tracks progress, and adapts to learners’ levels. Students can practice reading, writing, listening, and even speaking through interactive exercises. Its competitive elements, such as points and streaks, motivate learners to practice regularly, which enhances long-term retention.

Padlet (collaborative board platform) – Padlet allows students to post text, images, videos, and links on a shared board. This promotes collaborative learning as learners can read, comment, and respond to peers’ contributions. It is especially useful for writing and reading activities, brainstorming ideas, and creating visual projects. Padlet encourages creativity and reflection, and teachers can use it to provide feedback or highlight exemplary work.

Kahoot! (quiz-based tool) – Kahoot! engages students through interactive quizzes and games. It can be used to reinforce listening, reading, and grammar skills while making learning fun. Its timed quizzes create excitement and encourage quick thinking. Teachers can also track responses to identify areas where students struggle, allowing for targeted revision.

Question 2: Choosing Activities for Different Levels and Contexts

   A. Chosen TELL Material: Duolingo

Beginner level: Learners use Duolingo’s picture-word matching activity. For example, they match words like apple or dog with corresponding images. This caters to beginners’ need for vocabulary building and provides immediate feedback that reinforces recognition and recall. The gamified format sustains motivation and lowers the learners’ anxiety.

Intermediate level: Students complete Duolingo’s short translation tasks like translating the sentence “I used to play football every day” from the chosen language into English. This targets grammar structures and sentence formation, aligning with their need to practice applying language in context. The adaptive feedback feature also highlights errors, promoting self-correction and autonomy.

Advanced level: Learners engage with Duolingo Stories, where they listen to and answer comprehension questions about dialogues. This strengthens reading and listening comprehension while encouraging inferencing and critical thinking. It is suitable for learners preparing for academic or professional contexts.

   B. Reflection on Different Teaching Contexts

The effectiveness of TELL materials like Duolingo depends on the teaching context. In large classes, activities can be paired with collaborative tasks, such as group competitions based on app scores, to sustain engagement. In online learning, TELL tools provide structure and independent practice while teachers monitor progress through app analytics. For mixed-ability groups, the adaptive nature of TELL platforms is especially valuable where beginners focus on vocabulary, intermediates on grammar, and advanced learners on extended comprehension tasks, all within the same digital ecosystem.
