Part 1: Preparation – Teacher’s Role in New Literacies

  • The teacher’s responsibilities in building on the students’ involvement with multimodal texts, such as guiding students to interact with various modes of communication, such as texts, images, and sounds, to develop their digital and visual literacy alongside traditional literacy.

  • Next, teachers are expected to pick and design lessons that include applicable multimodal materials that are in line with the learning objectives.

  • Third, to ensure students interpret and link the meanings and differences between the different modes of texts, the teacher must impart direct instructions.

  • Following that, when introducing complex or abstract language concepts to students, the teacher could utilise visual representations to strategically build up on their comprehension.

  • Simultaneously, promoting the students’ critical thinking via analytical and reflective practices can help them to grasp the intricacy of the meaning these models of texts can convey.

  • Finally, it is crucial to model the usage of these digital tools and support the s students when producing their own multimodal outputs while amplifying their creativity and language command.
